76104: A Historic Community

The narrative that often goes along with Fort Worth is one reflective of "Cow Town" and its Wild West history of being nicknamed, "Hell's Half Acre." However, what gets lost in the fray is the rich history of Fort Worth's African American communities, especially the historical significance of the community within the 76104 zip code.

Long before efforts were being made to revitalize the Southside on the "other" side of I-35W, community organizers since the 1990s have been working diligently to bring back the beauty and cultural significance of Fort Worth's Near Southside landscape. The pictures featured in this gallery are but a small snapshot of the historical markers of Fort Worth's Black history and highlights of the 76104 community. These pictures were taken near Evans Avenue, Rosedale Street, Verbena Street, and Terrell Avenue. They feature the plaques and walkways of Evans Plaza, the "Walk of Fame" in front of the Ella Mae Shamblee Public Library, Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Historical Sunshine Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the Historical Marker of Terrell Heights, and the Fort Worth chapter of the NAACP.
